I launched 91 Magazine as an online magazine back in 2011. Since then, it has progressed to a print (and digital) publication, which is stocked in shops across the UK and internationally.
Publishing twice a year, each issue is carefully curated and commissioned by me and my small team, and has gained a loyal and ever-growing readership since going into print in 2016.
I have also previously guest edited editions of the Mollie Makes Home bookazine, published by Immediate Media.
My first published writing featured on the cover of the FT Weekend House & Home back in 2009 when I wrote about the rise of interiors blogs. Since then, and since becoming freelance in 2013, I have written for a number of lifestyle magazines about interiors and creative living. Titles include Mollie Makes, In The Moment, Project Calm, Mindful Christmas and The Colourist.
Picture editing was my first love and where I began my career; first working for Getty Images before spending five years as the picture editor on FT Weekend’s House & Home section.
As well as editing and publishing 91 Magazine, I also commission the shoots and edit them as they come in. My book, The Shopkeeper’s Home, also involved me commissioning photography and sourcing additional images. In addition to this, I have worked with book publishers as a picture editor on books such as Shed Decor and Studio, both by Sally Coulthard and My Bedroom is an Office by Joanna Thornhill.
I have lots of experience in managing tight budgets, negotiation, clearing rights and sourcing great imagery.
I wrote my first interiors book, The Shopkeeper’s Home in 2015, which was published by Jacqui Small. My passion for independent shops and interiors led me to propose a book featuring a number of independent shops and the homes of their owners, investigating the similarities and differences in their commercial and residential spaces.
REVIEWS:
“Author Caroline Rowland taps into a previously neglected source of decorating ideas: the boutique store owner. The section on vintage shops was, of course, our favourite. A light, bright and breezy read to dip into.“ - (Reclaim magazine)
"The Shopkeeper’s Home by Caroline Rowland is a genius idea. It allows you to get inside the homes of the coolest indie interiors retailers, and a lot of inspiration can be found there." - (Wayne Hemingway MBE)
I am where I am today because of blogging. I began blogging about interiors back in 2008; a creative outlet from my day job, exploring my new-found love for interior style. It led me to open an online shop for a few years, before realising my heart was in publishing and launching 91 Magazine.
I have watched the world of blogging evolve and change dramatically over the last 10 years or so, yet feel it is still very close to my heart. Time restraints mean I don’t write so much on my blog these days (originally Patchwork Harmony), but I believe blogs are still relevant and the blog that accompanies 91 Magazine is very much part of what keeps our audience engaged.
